Gamma
Knife Treatment
LEKSELL GAMMA KNIFE
The Leksell Gamma Knife is a state-of-the-art revolutionarydevice
which consists of an array of cobalt 60 sources that emit
Gamma ray Photons at a predictable rate. These photons may
be viewed as energy beams that can be focused in much the
same way that a magnifying glass focuses sunbeams. It delivers
201 intersecting beams of radiation to a specific target with
radiation dose gradient such that absorbed dose in the surrounding
healthy tissue is minimal. This allows non-invasive (without
opening the skull) brain surgery with extreme precision and
without injury to normal brain. When used in conjunction with
a stereotactic head frame, the precision of delivery is 0.3
mm. Its unique design with no moving parts gives it durability
and accuracy along with operational ease.

Gamma Knife Radiosurgery
Gamma knife Radiosurgery is a non-invasive treatment for treating
brain diseases. It is surgery without opening of the skull
and uses gamma rays to destroy lesions in the brain. The gamma
rays are precisely aimed in such a way that maximum concentration
of radiation is directed at the diseased part of the brain
while the surrounding tissues remains unharmed.
The safety and clinical effectiveness of Gamma Knife has been
established since 1968 and more than 2,00,000 patients have
been treated till December 2002. Gamma knife can be an alternative
or adjunct to conventional open surgery of the brain without
the dangers associated with it.
Radiosurgery can be especially useful for those patients who
are not suitable for conventional open surgery due to illness
or advanced age. In several neurosurgical cases, Gamma Knife
is the only feasible treatment modality.
